Omega Speedmaster Automatic Ref. 3510.12.00

Reviewed by: D.James McCudden - 027

Movement: The movement for this watch is an Omega cal.1141, 45 jewel, rhodium plated, with Geneva stripes on the topside of the movement and perlage on the outside. The whole affair is very well done. The chronograph module is exceedingly easy to use. The pushers give a satisfying click when pushed. All hands return precisely to zero when the lower pusher is depressed.

Case, Crystal and Crown: Very easy on the eyes. The case is the familiar Speedmaster design, with the familiar faceted lugs, tachometre bezel and acrylic crystal. Why Omega has to put a plastic crystal on an otherwise superlative watch I don't know. It does have an Omega logo embossed on its centre, though. Crown has an Omega logo embossed on the surface, and is fairly easy to work. It is recessed, so it can be a little hard to get at. Pushers are simple yet effective round items.

Dial and Hands: This is what caught my eye about this watch. The dial is done in deep yellow enamel, and done well. All markings are black enamel. Hands are black, for the main time display, hours minutes and seconds, while the chronograph hands are a deep blood red. the whole outside surrounded by a distinctive white minutes track, which is bears a distinct resemblance to a checkered flag. The whole dial has a very racy feel. This does not hurt its legibility at all, though. I have no trouble discerning the time of day from the six hands arrayed around the dial.

Accuracy: My Speedy auto is accurate to about 1-3 seconds a day. Not bad.

Strap, Buckle or Bracelet: The infamous "hair-puller" bracelet...I have found this bracelet to be exceedingly comfortable. The whole is made of solid steel, with SOLID steel end-pieces. The folding clasp is an ordinary clasp, but very well made. It has an Omega logo embossed on as well as the Speedmaster logo beneath.

User Manual and Packaging: The packaging for this watch is rather unusual. It consists of two miniature tires which split apart to reveal the watch inside. Very appropriate for this watch, I feel. The watch has two manuals, both of which cover its operation quite succinctly.

Comfort: This is easily the most comfortable watch I have. It fits my wrist with an admirable degree of precision. It is not at all bulky and has no nasty protrusions to bother one.

Value: The price of $2,300 Cdn is quite reasonable for a watch made to the standard that this watch is made. It's even more reasonable if you get a $600 Cdn discount plus a four-year extension on the warranty like I did.
